Building upon contemporary texts and modern histories of both famous and ordinary people, this course examines the indigenous empires known as the Aztecs and the Incas. It also examines the encounter of Europeans and native people, following the history of exploration and conquest from the time of Columbus to about 1550. Surveys the post independence history of 19th and 20th century Brazil. Looks at the development of Brazilian nationalism and political institutions and focuses heavily on race, ethnicity, gender and sexuality in Brazil, understanding how different peoples have settled and accommodated themselves to the Brazilian environment. Finally, it will look at Brazilian economic development and its consequences at the beginning of the 21st century.
